String Quartet by Amy Beach, the most important woman composer in the USA at the turn of the 20th century.
Piano Quintet by Florence Price, the most prominent African-American composer whose works are being performed by major US symphonies. This work is full of allusions to spirituals and a real audience pleaser.
Piano Trio by Germaine Tailleferre, French woman composer (1892-1983) and the only female member of the group of composers known as Les Six.
Piece by Nadia Boulanger, French music teacher, conductor and composer (1887-1879). She taught many of the leading composers and musicians of the 20th century.
Mary Scanlan earned her doctorate from the University of Illinois, taught at Roosevelt University and came to Grand Rapids in 1989. She taught piano and music history until she retired in 2008.
The Castalia Quartet has been performing together for thirteen years and specializes in music by women composers. It consists of Alicia Eppinga, cellist (principal cellist of the Grand Rapids Symphony since 2011 and a graduate of the Eastman School of Music), Leslie Van Becker, viola (recently retired principal violist of the GR Symphony and a graduate of Yale), Jenna Buchner, violinist with the GR Symphony and a graduate of Eastman. For this concert they will be joined by Letitia Jap, violinist, and affiliate Professor of violin at Grand Valley State University.
